Supporting a diverse digital workforce
A key priority for the Northern Territory Government is building a skilled and capable digital workforce for the future. Encouraging more women to pursue careers in technology is an important part of this goal.
In Australia, women make up only 29% of the information and communications technology workforce. Increasing the visibility of women in digital careers can help inspire more women and girls to consider these career pathways.
A diverse workforce brings different perspectives and ideas, leading to stronger problem-solving, innovation and better technology outcomes.
As technology continues to shape our daily lives, Digital Futures promotes the wide range of digital career opportunities available and encourages people to explore pathways into the sector.
Program development
Digital Futures was developed in consultation with:
- the ICT industry
- digital businesses
- non-government organisations
- Northern Territory Government agencies.
The group supporting the initiative's coordination, promotion and development included representatives from:
- Education
- Department of Trade, Business and Industry
- Digital Strategy
- STEM leaders
- event coordinators
- the ICT industry.
Digital Futures was established to engage women and young people.
The program showcases the variety of careers available in the digital sector and provides practical experiences designed to build skills, confidence and interest in technology careers.
Previous events
Digital Futures events aim to inspire women of all ages and career stages to explore digital career pathways. Guest speakers share their experiences to encourage new ideas, build confidence and highlight opportunities in the sector.
Digital Futures usually includes an annual showcase event. The first Digital Futures event was held in 2019 and featured 2 programs:
- My Path to Tech – for students in Years 9 to 11
- Inspiring Women into Technology – for women to hear from respected leaders working in digital industries.
